Indian Railways Highlights Need to Raise Capacity to Deal With Rising Passengers And Freight Traffic
Indian Railways is finding it extremely difficult to cope with the rise in passengers and freight traffic, and therefore it needs to raise capacity. The national carrier is incurring losses in the passenger segment since the fare is subsidised.
New Delhi, July 18: Railway Board Chairman Vinod Yadav said on Wednesday that Indian Railways is finding it extremely difficult to cope with the rise in passengers and freight traffic, and therefore it needs to raise capacity, according to a Live Mint report. He further said that Indian Railways is incurring losses in the passenger segment since the fare is subsidised. Indian Railways has taken a huge jump in the electrification of the railway tracks. Yadav further pointed out that in the previous financial year ended March, 5,300 km of track had been electrified as compared to 600 km/year electrification done five years ago.
In another report published a few days back, it came in news that Indian Railways has collaborated with ISRO to ensure punctuality of trains and real-time tracking! Indian Railways will be banking on Global Positioning System (GPS), ISRO satellites, CCTVs and WiFi to provide safe, secured and technologically advanced ambience and environment for its passengers.
