On the 72nd Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which is touted as the world's largest healthcare project, will be launched on September 25. "It is high time we ensure that the poor of India get proper access to good quality and affordable healthcare," he said.

"The healthcare initiatives of the Government of India will have a positive impact on 50 crore Indians. It is essential to ensure that we free the poor of India from the clutches of poverty due to which they cannot afford healthcare," he added.

On the 72nd Independence Day, PM Narendra Modi said the government managed to pass the GST and implemented long-pending OROP scheme for the armed forces.

"Who did not want the passage of the GST yet it was pending for years? Last year GST became a reality. I want to thank the business community for the success of the GST," said PM Modi.

"The OROP demand was pending for decades. The people of India, our brave army personnel had faith in us and we were able to take a decision on OROP. We will always take decisions in the interests of our nation," he added.

New Delhi, Aug 15: India celebrates its 72nd Independence Day today, commemorating the country's independence from Britain on 15 August 1947. To mark the Independence Day celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist tricolour on the ramparts of the historical site Red Fort (Lal Qila) in Delhi, and deliver his speech. The unfurling of the national flag will synchronise with the 21 Gun Salute fired by the valiant gunners of the elite 2281 Field Battery (Ceremonial). The ceremonial battery will be commanded by Lieutenant-colonel C Sandeep and the Gun Position Officer will be Regiment Havildar Major Kolate Rajesh Shripati. PM Modi is expected to address the nation by 8:00 am. Watch Live Streaming of Narendra Modi's Independence Day 2018 Speech Here

The Independence Day speech will be followed by school children and National Cadet Corps (NCC) Cadets singing the national anthem, and march past of various divisions of the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and paramilitary forces. In his Independence Day speech, PM Modi is likely to announce pilot projects of Ayushman Bharat in select district hospitals. He will also highlight the achievements of the government since 2014.

PM Modi's Independence Day speech will be streamed live on Doordarshan, DD National and its other channels. His speech will also be streamed live on Google and YouTube for a wider reach. The national capital has been put under a security blanket with 50 companies of security agencies, Delhi Police personnel and 150 kite catchers deployed for security to avert any unwarranted incident.

For the first time, an all-woman Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team is deployed at strategic locations.
