IKEA Opens First Indian Store in Hyderabad: Stampede-Like Situation Arises As People Throng to Enter the Swedish Furniture Outlet

Hyderabad, August 10: The Swedish home furnishing brand IKEA finally opened its first store in Hyderabad on Thursday. It is the first of the 25, the brand plans to open in India by 2025. The 13- acre complex, and the showroom displayed some 7,500 products, out of which 1,000 products under less than Rs 200 a piece. This created huge curiosity among people, and there was a stampede-like situation at the public opening of the shop.
IKEA has employed 950 people directly and another 1,500 indirectly at the Hyderabad store and plans to hire more 15,000 employees. While IKEA has been sourcing products for three decades, the store marks a milestone in their investments in the Indian market. The Indian store has kept a veg menu comprising of samosas, biriyani, hotdogs, veggie balls. Ikea was earlier supposed to open the store in July, but it got postponed because the company needed more time to fulfill quality commitments. According to a previous statement, IKEA Retail India CEO Peter Betzel said, "IKEA Retail India decided to move the date as it needs some more time to live up to its expected quality commitments towards customers and co-workers."
