Human Rights Violation in Jammu And Kashmir by Security Forces? India Rejects UN Report, terms it Fallacious
India has rejected a report by office of United nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights on “human rights situation in Kashmir" on Thursday.
New Delhi, June 14: India has rejected a report by office of United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights on “human rights situation in Kashmir" on Thursday. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has termed the report as fallacious, tendentious and motivated. The MEA has said, “We question intent in bringing out the report. It is a selective compilation of largely unverified information.”
The UN on Thursday in its report alleged Indian security forces of using excessive force in Kashmir since 2016. An international inquiry into alleged violations in the disputed territory has also been called. According to Reuters, The UN in its report also urged Pakistan to end its ‘misuse’ of anti-terror legislation to persecute peaceful activists and suppress dissent.
The report focuses on human rights violation incidents in Jammu and Kashmir from July 2016 to April 2018. Activists estimate that up to 145 civilians were killed by security forces and up to 20 civilians killed by armed groups in the same period, reported Reuters citing the report. The situation the Kashmir valley had worsened after the death of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on July 8, 2016.
U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein even condemned the lack of prosecution of Indian security forces under Armed Forces Special Powers Acts (AFSPA). Zied asked the Human Rights Council to launch a commission of inquiry into all violations.
