Hindi Continues to be Most Spoken Indian Language in United States With 8.74 Lakh Speakers, Followed By Gujarati And Telugu

Washington DC, October 31: Hindi is the most popular spoken Indian language in the United States with 8.74 speakers as of July 1, 2018, whereas Gujarati and Telugu come next. As compared to 2017, there is an increase of 1.3 percent increase in Hindi speakers in the US. According to a report published in The Times of India, the rise in the Telugu speakers in the last eight years is more than any other Indian language speakers in the US. The Telugu speakers increase by 79.5 percent in the last eight years. The number of Telugu speaking population increased from 2.23 lakh to four lakh. As per the American Community Survey (ACS) data for 2018, there are 67.3 million residents in the US who are aged over five years and speak a language other than English. Around 21.9 percent of US residents speak a foreign language at home. If we talk about other Indian languages, 3.75 people speak Bengal with an increase of 68 percent in the last eight years. Similarly, the Tamil speaking population rose by 67.5 percent in the US since 2010. According to the TOI report, the numbers of Gujarati and Telugu speaking population dipped between 2017 and 2018. There are 4.19 Gujarati speakers in the US. The number declined by 3.5 percent as compared to 2017. Similarly, Telugu speakers declined by 15,000 in 2018 as compared to the previous year. Currently there are four lakh US residents who speak Telugu.
