Mumbai, July 16: A high tide measuring 4.89 metres will hit the Mumbai shore today, July 16. The high tide will arrive at around 2:37 pm. Ahead of the high tide, the Disaster Management unit of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) advised citizens not to visit beaches and venture into the sea around that time. The civic body also asked people not to click selfies at beaches when high tide strikes.
High tides have been hitting the Mumbai shore since the arrival of the Monsoon. A high wave measuring 4.97 metres, the highest of the season, struck Mumbai coast yesterday. High tides in the last one week left tonnes of garbage along Marine Drive seafront. The BMC officials have collected at least 15 tonnes of waste since Saturday’s high tide. The BMC deployed 55 workers to clean Marine Drive seafront, which a popular tourist destination in the financial capital of the country.
Mumbai has been receiving heavy rains since last two weeks and received the highest rainfall on July 10. The Mumbai suburbs were clobbered with 184.3 mm rainfall, against the normal of 19.4 mm, which was 850 per cent higher. Mumbai city followed closely behind with 165.8 mm rains on Tuesday against the normal of 17.8 mm, or 831 per cent higher.
