The head priest of Kanchipuram Kamakoti Peetam Math, Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi, passed away early morning on February 28. Jayendra Saraswathi was the 69th Shankaracharya of the Kanchipuram Math. The head priest died at the age of 82, succumbing to his consistent ill health for a long time now. Jayendra Saraswathi took his last breath at Chennai’s Sri Ramchandra Hospital.

Condolences from all the parts of the country started pouring in, once the news of Shankaracharya’s demise came in. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu led the tributes, with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Health Minister JP Nadda among others followed suit.

As per the reports, the head priest was admitted to the hospital for the last couple of months. He was admitted with complaints of breathing problem and low blood pressure. The Math undertook a lot of charitable activities under its ambit, other than religious preaching, during the tenure of Jayendra Saraswati. Vijayendra Saraswati would now be appointed as the 70th Shankaracharya of Kanchipuram Kamakoti Peetam Math, after the demise of Jayendra Saraswathi.
