It is ranked 22nd in terms of area covering less than 1.4 percent of India’s land area. The state is often referred as "the land of God". In Sanskrit, "Hari" means "Lord Vishnu" and "ayana" is home. However, some scholars such as Muni Lal, Murli Chand Sharma, HA Phadke and Sukhdev Singh Chib believe that the name comes from a compound of the words Hari (Sanskrit Harit, "green") and Aranya (forest). In April 1966, the Shah Commission was set up by the government to divide the existing state of Punjab and determine the boundaries of the new state of Haryana after consideration of the languages spoken by the people. Justice JC Shah headed the commission. The commission submitted its report on May 31, 1966. The then-districts of Hisar, Mahendragarh, Gurgaon, Rohtak and Karnal became part of the new state of Haryana. The tehsils of Jind and Narwana in the Sangrur district — along with Naraingarh, Ambala and Jagadhri — also became part of the new state.

The Punjab Reorganisation Act was passed by the Indian Parliament on September 18, 1966, dissolving the former state of East Punjab. The new state of Haryana came into existence on November 1, 1966.
