New Delhi, Mar 14: The Election Commission of India was on Wednesday scheduled to declare the results of the recent by polls conducted in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The live results of the bye-elections in Gorakhpur, Phulpur, Araria, Jehanabad and Bhabhua will be updated on the ECI official website - www.eci.nic.in.
From Uttar Pradesh, the two Lok Sabha seats of Gorakhpur and Phulpur were up for grabs. The seats fall vacant following the appointment of incumbent MPs Yogi Adityanath and Keshav Prasad Maurya as Chief Minister and Deputy CM respectively.
By the time this report was first published, the BJP was leading in Gorakhpur by a margin of over 3,500 votes, whereas, the Samajwadi Party was ahead in Phulpur by more than 4,500 votes.
The bypoll results in UP will also determine the fate of a potential SP-BSP alliance in 2019, as the Mayawati-led party not only retracted from the bye-election race, but also extended backchannel support to the SP.
In Bihar, the Lok Sabha seat of Araria and the assembly constituencies of Jehanabad and Bhabua were contested in the bypolls on Sunday. As per the trends which emerged by the time this report was published, the BJP was leading in Araria and Jehanabad, whereas, the JD(U) was ahead in Bhabhua.
