The Centre has decided not to cut excise duty on petrol and diesel due to its fiscal responsibility, despite the rise in fuel rates, a top official had told PTI earlier this week. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had blamed “external factors” for the rise in domestic prices of petrol and diesel but said the increase is temporary.
In order to protest against the spiralling fuel prices, Congress and Left parties have decided to hold a Bharat Bandh (nationwide shutdown. Both the parties have decided to hold a nationwide strike against the Modi government over the steep rise in petrol and diesel prices. The Congress called the steep rise in fuel prices a 'fuel loot'.
Reacting to the call for Bharat Bandh, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused Congress of shedding 'crocodile tears' over rising fuel prices, saying the opposition party gave protection to the “price rise mafia” when it was in power and is now 'exploiting' the masses.
