The Congress workers organised a 'free hug' campaign at Connaught Place on Tuesday, replicating the gesture of party President Rahul Gandhi when he hugged PM Narendra Modi in Parliament. The workers held placards with the slogan 'remove hatred, save country', according to a report on ANI. The Congress workers gathered there to hug people who had gathered there to see what was happening.
Delhi Congress worker Aniruddh Sharma quoted in an Indian Express report said, "Rahul Gandhi told Parliament that only love and compassion can build a nation. We are here to take his message to the people. A hug is a way of giving love. But we also tell people that the idea of India lies in the fact that people from different religions should respect each other’s faith and live in harmony."
The Delhi Congress has plans of taking the campaign forward at all the city's Metro station, and will also promote the campaign on social media as well. On July 20, Rahul Gandhi after finishing his speech on No Confidence motion at the Lok Sabha walked across the aisle, and hugged PM Narendra Modi. While Rahul went back to his seat, he was also seen winking. His actions were condemned by the opposition members.
