Floods Ravage Tripura Leaving Six Dead, Over 3,000 Displaced
At least 36 makeshift camps have been set-up across the state to accommodate over 3,000 residents rendered homeless.
Agartala, May 21: Floods triggered by incessant rainfall continued to ravage Tripura for the third consecutive day in a row. Six people have been confirmed dead and over 3,000 left displaced. The government has expedited the relief and rescue operation, which is being interimly overseen by Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath as Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb is out of the state to attend the conclave of North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) in Guwahati.
At least 36 makeshift camps have been set-up across the state to accommodate over 3,000 residents rendered homeless due to the landslides reported in various parts of the state.
The floods were triggered following torrential rainfall in the North Tripura region, which led to massive erosion of soil on the foothills, as well as the planes.
While most of the underdeveloped region of Tripura has been marooned by the floods, at least half of capital Agartala also remains water-logged.
Traffic was also suspended temporarily on Sunday at the Assam-Agartala National Highway, after a portion of the highway was also flooded.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been pressed into action in five of the eight districts of Tripura. The primary rivers of the state, including Khowai, Haora, Gumti and Manu continue to flow above the danger mark.
The Chief Minister, in the past week, had announced financial compensation to those families affected the by the floods. Deb has also tasked the fire brigade and civil defence personnel to act on war-footing to help the flood-affected populace.
