Kanpur, September 5: Following a flood-like situation in Kanpur, due to heavy rainfall, the water levels of river Ganga have increased. Relief Commissioner Sanjay Kumar has directed all District Magistrates to be on alert in the wake of heavy rain warning till 6 September, issued by Meteorological Centre, Lucknow. According to an India Today report, more than 12 people have died in the past one day due to the floods in Uttar Pradesh. "Nearly 4,000 people have been affected and nearly 1,000 have been shifted to relief shelters," Flood Relief Officer Virag Kumar as quoted in the report said.

Besides the rainfall in Uttar Pradesh, the heavy rains in Uttarakhand and Nepal over the past week has also contributed to the floods. Rivers originating in Uttarakhand have swelled up and all of them flow into Uttar Pradesh.
