Delhi, February 12: A massive fire broke out on Monday, 12 February at two shoe factories in Delhi's Mangolpuri Industrial area and Narela. The fire tenders sent have gone up from seven to 15 and have been rushed at the spot, said reports. No casualities have been reported so far. On Saturday, 10 January there was fire in a garment factory in Delhi.

On January 20, a massive fire had broken out in the unit in outer Delhi's Bawana industrial area. The incident had claimed 17 lives and left two people injured. The owner of the unit had been arrested and sent to one-day judicial custody. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had ordered an inquiry into the incident while announcing an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh to the injured. Cases of fire have been frequent in Delhi in recent times.

Earlier on February 2, a similar incident had taken place in Delhi's Peeragarhi, where 20 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames. The fire, which had broken out in a shoe factory near Delhi's Peeragarhi in the wee hours was doused after six hours of struggle. A fireman had also been injured in the ordeal. The fire had engulfed the basement area, first floor and second floor of the shoe factory.

This is the third such case of fire in Delhi in the month of February. There needs to be an inquiry into these fire cases taking place in factories and elsewhere. In most of the fire cases, including the three this month, exact reason for fire is not reported and hence there's no corrective action taken to control or eliminate the fire cases. The practice of announcing a compensation is fine, but there must be genuine attempt at trying to get at the root of such cases so as to avoid them in future.
