Farmers' Protest Enters Day 4: Milk Distributed For Free, Vegetable Prices Continue to Soar Across Nation
As a result of the on-going strike, the vegetable prices have soared in various parts of the country, and there is a scarcity of milk being faced.
Protesters have thrown milk on road against Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh's remark on the ongoing farmers' strike. These farmers were also seen distributing milk to locals, who came up with utensils requesting for it in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Singh had recently said that farmers' are protesting only to draw media attention.
According to an Indian Express report, as part of the strike, dairy farm owners are not allowed to sell their produce to government-run milk plants and other dairies for supply in cities. However, due to the enormous loss, they are reconsidering their decision as there is no other option but to withdraw from the protest and sell milk to plants. Few others are thinking of giving milk out for free on roads or donating it to orphanages or old-age-homes.
These farmers are on a 10-day strike to demand loan waiver and right price for crops. As a way to protest, they have dumped vegetables, milk and other farm produce on roads and blocked supplies to cities in several states. As a result of which, the vegetable prices have soared in various parts of the country, and there is a scarcity of milk is also being faced.
The farmers union started the 10-day long protest on June 1, shutting down the supply of milk, vegetables and essential farm produce to mark the first death anniversary of the Mandsaur demonstration where six farmers were killed in police firing. The farmers who have called for the ten-day long protest will observe 'Gaon Bandh' from 1 June to 10 June, 5 June as Dhikkar Divas, 6 June as Saheed Sahadat Divas, 8 June as Asahyog Divas.
