New India, June 14: Eid-ul-Fitr crescent is expected to be sighted today in most states of India, except for Assam, West Bengal and parts of Maharashtra. Attempts are being made to the spot the crescent moon today. f the moon is sighted, Eid-al-Fitr will be celebrated tomorrow, June 15. Experts claim there is a possibility of regional and sect-wise disparities, as seen during the Ramadan moon sighting last month. The Hilal Committees in all state capitals are expected to make an announcement on Eid moon sighting shortly after namaz-e-maghrib, scheduled between 6:45 to 7:45 in different parts of the nation based upon the sunset. The designated authorities have deployed their personnel to keep a keen watch as the new moon does not last for more than a few minutes on its first day. Local Muslims in all regions have been asked to alert their imams and other authorities immediately after spotting the crescent with the naked eye.

In India, Eid al-Fitr is celebrated with much fanfare. The Government of India, along with the state governments, have declared a gazetted holiday on Friday. Socio-political leaders cutting across ethnic and religious lines participate in the celebration. According to the 2011 census, 14.2 per cent of India's population comprises of Muslims. The vast size also makes India the home of the second-largest number of Muslims in the world.
