Eid-ul-Fitr Celebrations in Kolkata Today with Special Prayers at Mosques

Thousands of Muslims assembled at the biggest congregation on the Red Road (Indira Gandhi Sarani) here to offer special prayers on the occasion, which marks the end of month-long Ramzan.

Kolkata, June 16:  Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated in Kolkata today with special prayers at mosques by the devout and exchange of greetings among friends and family members. Thousands of Muslims assembled at the biggest congregation on the Red Road (Indira Gandhi Sarani) here to offer special prayers on the occasion, which marks the end of month-long Ramzan.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attended the special prayer on Red Road and wished everybody a happy Eid-ul-Fitr. "May this Eid bring happiness and endless blessings from the Almighty. Eid Mubarak," Banerjee wrote on her Twitter handle yesterday.

Muslims from all walks of life assembled at mosques and eidgahs to offer Eid prayers as thanksgiving for the month-long fasting of Ramzan. The festival was observed in a big way at Nakhoda mosque and Tipu Sultan mosque in the city.

People were seen exchanging greetings and gifts and giving alms to the needy who had gathered around the mosques and eidgahs. Markets in various Muslim-dominated areas in the city were decorated on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. Imams of different mosques called for peace, harmony and brotherhood while extending wishes and greetings to the people.
