Eid Moon has been sighted in Mumbai and some parts of Maharashtra. The state will celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Saturday, June 16. Meanwhile, the announcement from Hilal Committees in West Bengal and Assam is awaited.

Mumbai/Kolkata, June 15: While the rest of India is bound to celebrate Eid al-Fitr tomorrow, ambiguity remains in West Bengal, Assam and Maharashtra - the three states where Ramzan began on May 18, a day later than scheduled. The three states have completed 29 fasts and if the moon will be sighted this evening, Eid will be celebrated tomorrow. But if the crescent is not spotted, West Bengal, Assam and Maharashtra will celebrate Eid on Sunday. Stay tuned here for the live updates on Eid moon sighting.

The Hilal Committees in Kolkata, Mumbai and Guwahati will be meeting post namaz-e-maghrib and issue a statement on sighting of the moon. The local populace has been asked to come up with testimonies if they spot the crescent in any part of the state.

Meanwhile, most of the Islamic world celebrated Eid today, on June 15, as the Hilal crescent was spotted yesterday. Among the major nations where the moon was not sighted on Thursday were Pakistan, India, Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. In Bangladesh, no attempts were made to sight the crescent as it observed Ramadan from May 18, a day later than the most of Islamic nations.

Eid al-Fitr is the biggest festival observed by the Muslim community. The festival also marks the end of Ramzan, the Islamic month when Muslims are bound to fast from dawn to dusk.
