In the recent time, Uttar Pradesh came across with considerable irregularities in the Assistant Teacher Recruitment Examination (ATRE) 2018. The exam results were declared in August. It was then discovered that the passing candidates' list contained 23 examinees who had not cleared the examination but were declared as qualified. In a process to investigate the alleged recruitment scam, the UP government has instituted a high-level committee so that exemplary punishment can be given to the guilty. The ATRE was conducted on May 27 at 248 centres across 18 divisions of Uttar Pradesh, and the results were out on August 13. The first district allocation list for counselling was announced on August 31, while the second one was published on September 2, 2018. To fill in 68,500 vacant posts of teachers in the government primary schools, above one lakh aspirants had appeared in the exam. But only 41,556 could clear it. The Hindustan Times reported that the teacher recruitment scam blew up when a candidate filed in the writ petition which claimed that the answer sheets were replaced. During the recruitment process, a list featuring names of 23 candidates appeared of which 21 who participated in the exam failed but were declared qualified in the result. As the irregularity was highlighted, the department withheld the results of such unqualified teachers. The candidates who could not clear the exam are demanding CBI probe to the matter. The UP government suspended Sutta Singh, secretary of the exam regulatory authority, Allahabad with immediate effect and ordered disciplinary action against her as per rules as she has been found guilty. Manisha Trighatia, Secretary, Basic Education was quoted in the same HT report as saying, “The committee will probe the anomaly in assistant teacher recruitment process and fix accountability of those involved. The panel will submit its report in seven days and will suggest measures to plug loopholes to prevent a recurrence of the scam.”
