In a tragic incident, a candidate of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) after being denied entry to the examination hall allegedly committed suicide on June 3. The incident happened in Delhi’s Rajendra Nagar as the boy was barred to write the exams due to late arrival. The 28-year-old has been identified as Varun and he left a suicide note that reads, “The rules are fine but there should be some leniency.” It has been further informed that the boy hails from Karnataka and he was preparing for the UPSC prelims since long time in Delhi.
The commission conducted its Civil Services Preliminary 2018 on Sunday at various exam centres across the nation. UPSC organised the national level exam to fill in around 782 vacancies. The Delhi police is investigating the matter and more details on the incident are awaited. This is not a first-time incident when UPSC students were reported to commit suicide. In February this year, a 31-year-old Delhi’s civil service aspirant hung himself from a ceiling fan after he failed to qualify in the UPSC preliminary exam. Police officials informed that the victim wanted to join the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).
On the other hand, this year a number of students have appeared in the prelims and informed that the first paper comprising questions of general studies were bit tough compared to other sections. The civil service examination is conducted by the UPSC every year in three stages: preliminary, main and interview for candidates who aspire to work with IAS, Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) among others. As the Prelims are held on June 3, the qualified candidates will sit for the main examination, the notification for which will be released soon.
