In a major move, the University Grants Commission (UGC) is considering to introduce a four-year undergraduate programme in all courses for all streams. The decision which is still pending will overrule the current three years UG programme. According to media reports, UGC proposed the change to increase the chances of students of taking admissions in doctoral (PhD) degrees. Under recent consideration, students will be allowed to directly take admission to PhD courses and in the process, they will save a year. Passing Masters is not mandatory anymore, if the advice is passed. The recommendation is in the draft and a final nod on UGC’s recommendation is awaited. Fake Universities List Released by UGC, Check State-Wise Institute Names Here.

In 2013, Delhi University had introduced four-year UG courses, but the NDA government took it down in 2014. Students who had already taken admission as per DU’s move, switched back to three-year courses. An expert committee was organised by UGC recently, which was headed by P. Balaram, former director of the Indian Institute of Sciences (IIM), Bangalore, proposed these changes to “improve the quality of research,” commission vice-chairperson, Bhushan Patwardhan told The Telegraph. In addition, to make the examiners accountable, the universities will have to mention the examiner’s name on the thesis, which is not done now.

The four-year UG programme would allow students to directly join PhD courses. At present, a student after finishing a three-year degree course and two-year master’s they can study PhD. Besides, the requirement of every PhD student to publish at least one research paper in an arbitrated journal is currently “under review.” The fourth year of the bachelor course would focus on research. Again, students after completing a four-year UG programme will also be able to enrol in the master’s course instead of PhD.
