New Delhi, October 4: The University Grants Commission (UGC), a regulatory body charged with upholding higher education standards in India, has issued a notification on the prevalence of counterfeit universities. The UGC has produced a thorough list of 20 fake educational institutions operating in various states across India, with Delhi having the largest concentration, with eight such institutes.
This list includes universities from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, among others. The major goal of this list is to aid in the identification of these bogus colleges and to raise awareness of their presence among students and parents. "I would like to inform you that your institution figures in the list of fake Universities, as the institution is not a ‘University’ within the meaning of Section 2(f) or Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, but engaged in the business of conferring degrees or using the word ‘University’ with its name to defraud and cheat innocent students by awarding fake degrees. It has become a matter of concern as many students are becoming victims of the fraudulent act of your institution", UGC Secretary Manish Joshi wrote in an official letter to the Vice-Chancellors of these universities.
