'One Nation-One Education Board': Supreme Court Accepts PIL Seeking Common Syllabus, Asks Centre to Respond
The petitioner also suggested the court to ask additional solicitor general Sandeep Seth to study the feasibility of his demand and present the court with a roadmap on how it could be implemented.
New Delhi, May 23: The Supreme Court has admitted a public interest litigation for hearing which seeks the implementation of 'One Nation-One Education Board'. The bench, headed by Justices A K Goel U U Lalit, asked the Centre to respond to the PIL.
The petition was moved on Tuesday by Delhi-based BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay. Notably, the court was earlier reluctant to admit his plea, saying the demand raised by the petitioner appears to be unenforceable.
The bench told Upadhyaya to approach the government instead, as even if the court passes an order in his favour, it "may not be implemented".
The petitioner, however, urged the top court to admit his plea and direct the central government to respond. Agreeing to the suggestion, the apex court not only listed the matter for hearing, but also asked the Centre to file a reply within eight weeks.
The petitioner also suggested the court to ask additional solicitor general Sandeep Seth to study the feasibility of his demand and present the court with a roadmap on how it could be implemented.
Explaining the rationale behind the PIL, the petitioner said a common syllabus and curriculum is necessary to "promote fraternity, assuring dignity of the individual and unity and national integration".
The petitioner further claims that the absence of a common education system is the reason why "Indians do not stand united on national issues".
Notably, a similar petition was dismissed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra in December last year, calling it impractical and impossible to impose.
