The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) will go back to the offline mode from 2019 for admissions into 21 National Law Universities (NLUs). The entrance exam is conducted by the 21 participating law schools in a rotation. However, as per the recent reports, the newly-built National Testing Agency (NTA) has shown its interest to conduct the coveted national-level law entrance examination. NTA has shared an affidavit as a response to the Supreme Court’s query asking for the agency’s willingness to hold CLAT. They newly-built body has submitted the document stating its abilities to conduct the CLAT 2019 exam. CLAT Back to Offline Mode! From 2019, Entrance Exam for Law Courses Will Be Conducted in Pen-Paper Format.

The SC had passed an interim in which it stated that it is not satisfied with the way CLAT is conducted. Last year, the entrance exam was conducted by NUALS Kochi which was attacked with technical glitches that shook a lot of students. These flaws resulted in the filing of Police Complaints against the conducting body. It was because of such significant blunders that in the fourth meeting of the Consortium of National Law Universities, it was decided that CLAT 2018 will be conducted in the offline mode. The Supreme Court further initiated the idea of various NLUs holding the exam to be revisited.

If we go by reports, the Bar Council of India (BCI) which conducts the All India Bar Examinations (AIBE) also voiced its prerogative to conduct CLAT from 2019 onwards. The apex court also stated that the Bar Council of India has been successful while conducting the AIBE since 2011. So far, there has been no complaint concerning the conduct of the exam. On the other hand, NTA is a new conducting body which has been given responsibilities to hold various popular entrance exams. The final decision for the conduct of CLAT lies in the hands of the Supreme Court of India.
