In a major shift from the present model, the draft of National Education Policy 2019 advises that the first year or two of the MBBS course should be designed as a common period for all the science graduates. After the completion of that period, they can take up medicine (MBBS), dentistry (BDS), nursing or other specialisations. However, the lateral entry will not mean any cakewalk for the medical aspirants. Dr Devi Shetty, Chairman of Narayana Health, who also contributed to the draft proposal, clarified to TOI that lateral entry would not be allowed to become a free pass for entry into MBBS. So, nursing and dentistry students will have to participate in the NEET exam, but after that would only have to complete the remaining years of the course.
