NEET UG 2019 Result Declared: Nurses & Dentists to Get Lateral Entry Into MBBS, Suggest National Education Policy 2019

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has declared the result for National Entrance cum Eligibility Test (NEET) for Undergraduate courses. As the NEET UG 2019 All India Rank List has been released online at ntaneet.nic.in, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has activated the link to register for UG Medical counselling session. Along with the NEET UG 2019 result announcement, comes probable changes for medical education as suggested by the National Education Policy 2019. The newly released draft, makes big promises calling for the overhaul of the education system. One of the essential changes, proposed by the government is to allow lateral entry of nursing and dentist students into MBBS course with a common foundational one to the two-year course for doctors, dentists and nurses. Hindi Not Compulsory For Students, Modi Government Tweaks Three-Language Formula in Draft Education Policy.

In a major shift from the present model, the draft of National Education Policy 2019 advises that the first year or two of the MBBS course should be designed as a common period for all the science graduates. After the completion of that period, they can take up medicine (MBBS), dentistry (BDS), nursing or other specialisations. However, the lateral entry will not mean any cakewalk for the medical aspirants. Dr Devi Shetty, Chairman of Narayana Health, who also contributed to the draft proposal, clarified to TOI that lateral entry would not be allowed to become a free pass for entry into MBBS. So, nursing and dentistry students will have to participate in the NEET exam, but after that would only have to complete the remaining years of the course. Many changes have been introduced in the policy, including to curb the role of the various councils for medicine, nursing and dentistry to only setting professional standards and outsourcing inspection and accreditation work to “empanelled agencies,” as stated in the same report. The draft policy also suggests introducing the much-awaited common exit exam for all the MBBS graduates. Besides, the policy even states to do away with the fee regulation completely while mandating scholarships for 50% of students, with 20% getting a full scholarship. It shall be noted here that, the above changes are only suggestions is a part of the draft of National Education Policy 2019. None of the above, has been confirmed to be followed yet.
