Mumbai, April 17: Things seem to be slipping and going downward for Mumbai University. After late results and faulty question papers, the performance of the university on parameters prescribed by the National Institute of Ranking Framework (NIRF) for Mumbai has been disappointing to say the least. Once counted as among the best Universities in the country, the university has been ranked at 155 spot out of total of 230 universities. Whereas Pune University, which for a long time was considered a competition for the Mumbai University has bagged the 9th position.

The Human Resource Ministry has released a report ranking the universities in India on various parameters and the University of Mumbai has ranked 155th on  the list. The university's ranking has come down drastically as it was earlier in the 101-150 band and has now been put in the 151-200 band ranking. In comparison, the Savitribai Phule Pune University has been placed on the 9th rank and outclassed it's cousin university by a huge margin.

The parameters on which the universities have been ranked by the Human Resource Ministry are—teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception as reported by the Times of India. The University of Mumbai has suffered in recent times and has been plagued by reports of answer sheets missing from the university. The results of the academic year 2016-2017 was delayed by almost four months. However, the university in its defense had said that the delay in results were due to the online assessment adopted by the Mumbai University for the first time in the academic year. But teachers and many educationists said that the move was taken by the university without proper evaluation of readiness. It was termed as a case of good intentions but bad implementation on the part of the university and has led to a dent in the reputation of the varsity. The university was found lacking on the parameters of research and the campus scored low on disable friendly parameter. In a worrying sign for the state of Maharashtra, no other university from the state except the Savitribai Phule Pune University has been ranked in top 150 universities in India.
