The educational boards in India have time and again appeared in the headlines for repeatedly for failing in simple additions and putting students’ career at stake. Following such failures, many candidates have appealed to the High Court and even to the Supreme Court to get justice in their respective cases. As the decision makers are adopting strict measures to ignore such embarrassment, Gujarat State Board has once again committed a major blooper. A class 10 student was marked 80 out of 50 marks in his class 10 Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Mathematics board exam. But it could have been perfect luck for the student, had the blunder not been too obvious. GSHSEB to Follow CBSE! Gujarat State Board Introduces New Exam Pattern for Classes 10, 12 Students.

“The teacher who assessed the paper made the gross error of giving 80 marks out of 50 was shown the answer sheet. The student had scored only 8 marks,” M.M. Pathan, Gujarat State Board officer was quoted as saying in a TOI report. The teacher’s concern was related to those 6,000 cases who were found to commit blunders while checking the answer sheets of class 10 and class 12 board exams. Out of them, the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) decided to summon 3,200 teachers for making errors worth ten marks or more while assessing the SSC papers.

The same report stated that these teachers are being summoned in batches and will be shown gross errors they have made, where every mark has the potential to alter the career paths of students. Another erroneous calculation was cited in which two class 12 HSC Science students were given extra 15 and 13 marks respectively. Interestingly, the teacher’s mistake was not even caught by the moderator or the coordinator who constitute the next two levels of checking the answer sheets.

Exam Secretary R.H. Junakiya said, “It is a rare occurrence that mistakes in papers which were seen by both moderator and coordinator were not caught and rectified. This is a serious failure and the case has been highlighted to the teachers who are being called.” It seems that the evaluator is in some serious trouble!

Recently, the most controversial, Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) too had committed considerable mistakes in calculations. Not just they scored more than the total marks, but even got marks for answers which they did not appear. Such errors have become very common among the educational boards, worsening the students’ career. Either they will give absolutely fewer marks than the candidate deserves, or they award marks more than the total reserved in the exam.
