Jammu, February 19: Jammu city, which has been witnessing massive protests in the wake of the Pulwama terror attack, remained tense on Tuesday, with authorities cancelling exams for class 8 and 9 students, scheduled to be held on February 20. Despite the curfew, protests were held in Jammu against the Pulwama terror attack, which claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel.
"As per instructions of Divisional Commissioner, exams of 8th and 9th classes scheduled for tomorrow are postponed. In all other districts, these exams shall be held as per schedule," Director of School Education, Jammu, said in a statement. Curfew in Jammu was relaxed in a phased manner on Tuesday after which people thronged markets to buy essential commodities. However, the situation remained tense in the winter capital. Jammu District Magistrate Ramesh Kumar initially ordered relaxation of curfew in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of Nawabad police station, Jammu city and Peer Mitha from 11.30 am to 1.30 pm, followed by relaxation in the areas of bus stand police station, Pacca Danga, Bakshi Nagar and Janipur from 3 pm to 5 pm. Later, the curfew was relaxed in the entire south Jammu from 3.30 pm to 7 pm.
Despite the curfew, protests continued in Jammu on Tuesday. Led by Jammu West Assembly Movement (JWAM) president Sunil Dimple, the activists gathered on road in New plot area of the city and held protest demonstrations. Dimple threatened to intensify holding intense protests as he alleged Pakistan for starting a full-fledged proxy war against India in Kashmir and across the LoC. He appealed the Government of India to start massive clean-up operation in the entire Kashmir region.
Protests erupted after 40 CRPF personnel were killed when their convoy was targeted on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway on Thursday. The convoy comprised 78 buses in which around 2500 personnel were travelling from Jammu to Srinagar. Soon after, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), which is based in Pakistan and backed by the Pakistani administration, claimed responsibility for the attack.
