Chartered Accountancy (CA) students across the country staged protest demanding a re-evaluation of answer sheets among other paper-checking reforms. They have taken it to social media to address their concern along with hashtag #dearicaipleasechange. The protest was organised days after the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) introduced paper-checking reforms, but failed to introduce the norm of re-evaluation. The ICAI in its notification said all papers of CA Intermediate and Foundation level examinations to be held on November 2019 and May 2020 would be put through digital evaluation mode. The institute said the move is to do away with stages of physical handling of answer book so that the variation of marks awarded by examiners can be avoided. However, the new change did not seem to impress the CA aspirants.
CA exams are tough to crack, and while there is no doubt about it, lakhs of students in India every year enrol themselves to the professional course. As the results are released, many students are visibly left behind. Again some complained that there had been alleged errors in paper checking procedure. This has stopped many aspirants to crack the exams at a go. And since the revaluation of the answer booklet is not permitted under the Chartered Accountants Regulations, 1988, candidates are left with no choice but reappear in the exams. Hence, they demand reform in ICAI paper-correction procedures.

In 2018 too, students and a few teachers alleged that there had been instances of errors in the evaluation of the examination. At the time, they demanded ICAI to amend Regulation 39 (4) of CA Regulations, 1988. It is the same concern that has been raised again by the aspirants across India. The protests have been staged after ICAI introduced its paper checking reform that will from this year be digital. However, as per the institute’s rules, the paper will not be re-evaluated.
