Yes, it is officially happening. The Hip Hop course which was earlier planned for the academic year 2018-19, has been reportedly approved by an expert panel. The course, an idea initiated by Dr Sanjay Ranade, head of the department of communication and journalism at MU, the course received a final not recently. According to Hindustan Times, Yatindra Ingle, assistant professor at MU, who is also a rapper will be the coordinator for the course. Ingle was quoted as saying, “A committee was put together to make sure a subject like Hip-Hop can be taught. “The course will take students back to the days when Hip-Hop was first introduced in the streets of the US as a platform to speak out against oppression, violence, identity, culture and power,” Ingle further added.
Introduction to Hip Hop Studies: Eligibility Criteria
Students who have surpassed class 12 board examination are eligible to apply. Also, the course is said to be quite affordable as candidates will have to pay Rs. 5,000 for the curriculum. Artistes from the field will guide the students to understand the concept during their weekend classes. Besides, the students will also have to submit a thesis on selected topics related to the art form and participate in a written exam to pass the course.
The introduction to this course has received mixed reactions. But if everything goes well, Introduction to Hip Hop Studies is expected to draw many talented artists giving them a platform to learn and explore the genre.
