Rumours against the AICTE introducing an exit exam began last year. According to many media outlets, GATE was headlined for being announced as a compulsory exam for final year engineering students to clear the degree. Soon after the news, the students were left in shock and took to Twitter outrage over the decision. At the beginning of this month, the secretary of higher education, R. Subrahmanyam denied such claims earlier on Twitter. Now, with an official release, the Vice Chairman of AICTE, M.P. Poonia clarified the same on the AICTE website; aicte-india.org. The notice reads, “AICTE has noted with concern that some newspapers have carried an item stating that AICTE is deciding to make GATE as mandatory exit examination. AICTE has not taken any such decision. This is issued to clarify all stakeholders.” GATE is a national level entrance exam which is conducted by IITs for students who wish to study M.Tech in IITs, NITs, GFTIs and other esteemed universities across the country. GATE 2019 is scheduled to be held on February 2, 3, 9 and 10 for which the admit card will be issued from January 4 onwards.
