Reading books is one of the most fundamental skills that are good to be developed among school students at earliest the possible. It just does not benefit them academically, but they are a skill for lifelong success too. In a bid to promote just that, the Delhi government on October 20 inaugurated 100 new libraries in the capital city’s schools. Also, these small children are managing the system themselves. Reportedly, these are in addition to the 100 libraries that the government had opened last year during the same month in collaboration with a non-profit, Room To Read. As per of its policy, the capital city’s government is going to set up more libraries in every section of the primary classes to engage children with books. The Room To Read in 2017 had signed a MoU with the Delhi government to build 450 libraries in partnership with the Directorate of Education. The aim is to ‘develop literacy and a habit of reading.’ Room To Read Director, Sourav Banerjee told The Indian Express, that the organisation had provided 56,671 books across the 100 schools where about 27,672 children are enrolled. “We’ve roughly provided around 200 titles and 500 books per school. Over three years, the number of books in each library will increase to about 1,000. The final number depends on student enrolment. The aim is to have a ratio of eight books per student,” he added.
