The British Council India recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently with the North Eastern Council (NEC) to strengthen the educational and cultural cooperation and economic growth of the eight states of the Northeast. Days after that, the British Council has now linked with Delhi government to strengthen “spoken English” among students of the government schools in the capital city. Reportedly, the MoU was signed by the Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia and Director of British Council India, Alan Gemmell at a Delhi government school in West Vinod Nagar. At the occasion, apart from the officials, many students and teachers were also present. The agreement is expected to strengthen the partnership between the two sides, in the field of education, English language learning, youth skilling, including art and culture. “The MoU will entail training for spoken English for class 11th students of all Delhi government schools. Under the programme 12,000 students will receive 160 hours of training of which 11,000 students have already completed the training in two phases,” a Delhi government was quoted in a PTI report. The council will also train teachers of all the capital city’s government schools so that they can convey quality education to the students. Reports also state that the British Council Chairman (Global) Christopher Rodrigues praised the Delhi government for doubling the budget for education and bringing in the ‘Happiness Curriculum.’ In the existing partnership, spoken English courses are being offered with Macmillan Education. It is currently working on a project called ‘Changing Minds Changing Moves’ which incorporates elements of dance and cricket in physical education lessons to promote gender equity in classrooms. It is a pilot project at present in three Delhi government schools and would be expanded eventually.
