Hyderabad, August 18: Even though science has no unanswered question related to childbirth, textbook of class 10 in Telangana tells students that it is an unsolved mystery. "We still do not know much about the mechanism of childbirth and how it is triggered," says class X biology textbook of the Telangana State Council Educational Research and Training (TSCERT).

The textbook also omits vagina and penis while defining every single organ in the male and female reproductive system. "When they can write about testes, urethra, ovaries, and uterus and their functions, why omit these? They could give a simple explanation like the urethra passes through a muscular organ called the penis," C Srinivasulu, assistant professor of zoology at Osmania University, was quoted by TOI as saying. Rajasthan Govt Forms Committees to Review School Textbooks.

These are just two of many flaws in textbooks of TSCERT. The biology textbook for class 8 says the only reason why two people get married is to produce babies. It reads: "Marriage is a social and cultural practice to produce next generation in our country. Before reaching the required age to get married is an unhealthy issue (sic)."

These errors have left many experts stunned. "I can’t understand how they can write in a textbook that they do not know much about the mechanism of childbirth," Srinivasulu said. "This only shows the knowledge the textbook writers have about marriage, reproduction, and childbirth," Venkata Sainath, joint secretary, Hyderabad Schools Parents Association, said.
