The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) results 2018 on June 4. The cut off has dropped by 12 marks this year for open category and for reserved candidates, it has come down to 11 marks. Hours after NEET results 2018, two cases of suicide have been reported. A 17-year-old girl was found dead at her home in Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu on June 4. Police suspects that she had killed herself by consuming poison. PTI reported about a 19-year-old aspirant who jumped from 8th floor of a building in Dwarka Sector 12, New Delhi soon after the NEET results went live.

In both the cases, the reports are suggesting that the aspirants chose death after they failed to clear the national entrance exam for undergraduate medical and dental cases. According to Hindustan Times, the girl from Tamil Nadu, a resident of Peruvallur village has been identified as S Pratibha. One of her neighbour was quoted in the same report that she cleared NEET last year and qualified to study traditional medicine Siddha. But she opted to sit for the entrance test again as she was adamant to pursue Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The neighbour named V Murugesan was quoted in the same report saying, “She declined that and appeared for NEET again for the second time this year as she was firm in her dream to be a MBBS doctor.” In Tamil Nadu’s junior school exam, Pratibha scored 495 out of 500 marks. Pratibha died on Monday night after she consumed rat poison. Her family immediately took her to the hospital and the doctors informed that she was brought dead at around 12:00 am.

In another case, around 5:15 pm on June 4, Delhi police was informed about a 19-year-old NEET aspirant. The youth was identified as Parnav Mehandirata who jumped from the building and his body was found lying on the ground right beneath the balcony of his residence with blood all over. After much enquiry, one of the police official told PTI, “Further Enquiry revealed that deceased was appearing in the NEET exam for the last two years after passing class 12 in year 2016. Today, the result of NEET was declared in noon and he had failed to qualify the exam.” A suicide note was discovered which said that he had lied about CBSE NEET results to his parents.

In the recent years, after NEET results announcement, cases of students committing suicide are making headlines. Last year, a 17-year-old Scheduled Caste girl committed suicide as she was unable to pursue MBBS course due to poor performance in NEET. In January 2018, a 17-year-old girl NEET aspirant was found dead from the ceiling of her hostel room. Every year, lakh of students register for CBSE NEET 2018 and a handful of students as per the number of seats qualify for MBBS and BDS courses. This year, a total of 13,26,725 candidates appeared for the exam which was conducted by CBSE on May 6.
