The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) moved to Supreme Court against Madras High Court judgement of awarding grace marks to the medical aspirants. But, things did not turn up to their favour, and on July 20, the apex court stayed the Madras HC order to grant 196 grace marks to all the 24,000 students who participated in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in Tamil. In addition to this, the SC also ordered NEET 2018 second round-up of counselling to be resumed.
On July 10, the Madurai Bench of the High Court had asked CBSE to grant four marks each for 49 incorrect translated questions that appeared in this year’s NEET question paper in Tamil. Due to such erroneous paper, the students’ future who took the exam in the regional language would come at stake. CBSE on the other hand, countered the judgement arguing that in case of discrepancy in the translation, the English version of the questions stands valid. Following the Madras HC order of awarding grace marks, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) put the second round of counselling on hold for MBBS and BDS admissions.
In its appeal to the Supreme Court, the CBSE had claimed that the board had used translators recommended by the Tamil Nadu government and that the experts founded no fault. With the Supreme Court’s order to give grace marks and beginning with the counselling, the new schedule is expected to release soon. There were 180 questions in total holding 720 marks in CBSE NEET 2018. In Tamil Nadu alone, nearly 1.07 lakh candidates sat for the entrance exam. The exams were conducted on May 6 in 136 cities in 11 , and the results for the same were announced on June 4.
