The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is conducted for those who seek to get admission to the undergraduate MBBS and BDS courses in top private and government colleges in India. So far, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted NEET for all the medical aspirants, and they test their skills in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. According to their norms, the students must score at least 50 per cent on the individual subjects. However, a recent study has done shocking revelations on the national level exams. In 2017, at least 400 students scored single-digit marks in Physics and 110 candidates got zero, or negative marks have been admitted for MBBS courses in top private colleges.

TOI in a report, analysed the subject marks of 1,990 students who got admission to MBBS courses based on NEET scored less than 150 out of total 720 marks in 2017. The report revealed that about 530 secured single-digit marks or zero or even less in Physics or Chemistry or both. Out of these many students, 507 secured seats in private medical colleges. This raises serious questions on their official notices which claim that students must score at least 50 per cent in each subject during the entrance exams. Now, if scoring such low marks does not make a candidate unsuitable for admissions than why to test at all.

The report further revealed that the average tuition fees paid by these students in the private colleges are about Rs. 17 lakh per annum. This year, around 7,14,562 candidates have qualified the exam as compared to last year which was 6,11,739. On the other hand, the Union Minister of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Prakash Javadekar announced that NEET and IIT JEE would be conducted twice a year in a computerised manner by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
