Bangalore University Toppers Asked to Pay Rs 500 for Gold Medals & Certificates
In an official circular issued by the Bangalore University examinations section, both undergraduate and post-graduate toppers are asked to submit Rs 500 in order to collect their much-deserved token of appreciation.
The intelligent and sincere students are one of a kind. They deserve recognition and appreciation for the years of hard work they have put in to achieve success at the highest level of competition. However, the rank holders and gold medal winners of Bangalore University are in for a bitter shock. They have been asked to pay Rs 500 extra to get their much-deserving gold medals and certificates. Sounds unbelievable, right? But it is a harsh reality.
In an official circular issued by the Bangalore University examinations section, both undergraduate and post-graduate toppers are asked to submit Rs 500 in order to collect their much-deserved token of appreciation. “The rank holders shall submit the applications to the University by paying the fee of Rs 500 for rank certificate along with the regular fee,” the notification reads. The extra money has to be paid in the form of Demand Draft drawn in favour of Finance Officer of the university.
Candidates are invited to collect their gold medals and certificates at varsity’s 53rd Annual Convocation scheduled to take place soon. A common fee has been decided for all the students who are eligible to get their convocation/graduation certificates. But the rank holders and gold medal winners will be awarded with an extra payment of Rs 500.
Students are highly let down by this move of University. Several candidates expressed their disappointment and rightly so. In a media report, a BBM topper questioned the authority for this unjustified step saying, “Gold medals and ranks do not come easy. They are hard-earned by students who put three years of sincere effort. Why should we pay extra for our efforts?”
Another student who was disappointed with the move says, “Instead of honouring us for our good academic performance, the varsity is asking us to pay extra money. This is ridiculous and such things can happen only in universities here.” Few students reported that their parents have asked them not to pay as it is an “insult” to their hard work.
When asked about the situation, the University authorities say that this has been in practise since years. “Every year, the fees see a 10% increase. Last year, it was Rs 380, which has now been increased to Rs 500. Since students will be getting more medals and rank certificates this year, the university needs money. The money collected will be utilized for printing certificates,” Prof C Shivaraj, Registrar evaluation of Bangalore University was quoted in the same media report. He further assured that the matter will be placed before the syndicate and attempt to stop this practise. Well, we endeavour that the students celebrate their achievements fairly.
