Bangalore University Decides to Not Collect Extra Money from Gold Medallists

After several media reports stated Bangalore University's stand of collecting Rs 500 from toppers for gold medals and certificates, the varsity has called off its decision.  The university decided to stop collecting extra money from its hardworking and meritorious gold medallists and rank holders in undergraduate and post-graduate courses. In fact, the money collected from the students will also be returned.

Professor C. Shivaraju, Registrar of Evaluation Bangalore University told the media, “I have presented this issue in the syndicate and we have come to a conclusion that Rs 500 will not be collected anymore and students will be given medals and certificates from the university funds according to the University Act.”

The rank holders and gold medal winners of Bangalore University went hostile when in an earlier notification, the University said the interest earned in the total fund is not enough to award gold medals to its candidates hence the students will have to pay extra for the same. The rank-holders were asked to pay Rs 500 through a demand draft in favour of the Finance Officer of the University. On 10th January 2018, Bangalore University had its Syndicate meeting pertaining to this subject as their discussion agenda.

The University took a unanimous decision to stop the practise and increasing that fee 10 percent every year. Another University official said, “This is a historic move. This special syndicate has made a decision that will go by the way it benefits the students. We will discuss this further on how to ensure enough funds are flown to the Endowment Funds.”
