Chennai, August 2: Anna University in Tamil Nadu has come under scrutiny for an alleged cash for marks scam and a professor-student nexus. According to reports, The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption blew the lid off the alleged scam and filed an FIR naming former controller of examinations GV Uma and nine professors for passing students by re-evaluating their answer sheets in exchange of money.
Reports say that each student was charged Rs 10,000 per answer sheet and those who paid could get their sheets re-evaluated and pass the examination. The scam was unearthed after the agency conducted surprise checks on the premises of suspects and seized incriminating documents like answer scripts.
Initial probe into the case said that of the 3,02,380 students who applied for re-evaluation, 73,733 passed and 16,636 got extra marks.
According to a report in The Hindu, the accused “destroyed a maximum number of the answer scripts of the students for whom they awarded enhanced marks/pass marks in the revaluation done during August 2017 at Tindivanam and thereby caused disappearance of evidence relating to the criminal offence committed by them.”
A similar case had been reported at Anna University in 2012 when two faculty members had confessed to granting extra marks to some students by re-evaluation owing to pressure from senior staff members.
