Chandigarh, September 26: The Government Medical College in Amritsar has banned students from wearing skirts, t-shirts, jeans and capris, as per the notification issued by the administration on Thursday. The ban, to be imposed from October 1, will be applicable on both boys and girls.

The order was issued by Principal Sujata Sharma, describing it as a disciplinary measure. The female students, as well as teachers, have been asked to wear salwar suit or formal trouser-shirts. Whereas, the male students and teachers have been asked to wear formal trouser-shirts only. Dress Code For Madrassas in Uttar Pradesh: Yogi Adityanath Government Plans to Replace Kurta Pyjama With Pant Shirt.

Sharma said action would be taken against students and teachers who violate the order. The Principal further clarified that the ban will be applicable only in the classrooms and examination centres. Students and teachers will not be restricted from entering the campus or hostels in the casual attire.

The notification condemned the faculty and students who are keen on wearing jeans, t-shirts capris and skirts to the campus, calling it "uncivilised". The Principal's personal assistant, Arun Bhogie, said the intent of the new rule is create an environment which is conducive for medical studies.

Although the students have not opposed the order, many of them, while speaking to reporters, said emphasis on quality of education is more important than issuing such moral diktats.
