Students of Allahabad University are protesting against the order to vacate the campus hostels for summer break. The objection has turned to a riot led by the inmates on the streets right outside the union hall gate during the afternoon on June 5. They further set vehicles on fire. Uttar Pradesh Provincial Armed Constables and other police officials had to step in as the situation turned violent. They later invaded the Hindu Hostel located at the University premises in search of agitators, but everybody ran away by then.
The distress at the university campus began when proctor Ram Sevak Subey informed the hostel residents on June 4 that the authorities would begin their eviction drive with the help of police and district administrators on June 12, 2018. This outraged the students and according to Hindustan Times, the protesters attacked the vehicles passing by with stones and set a UPSRTC workshop bus, a motorcycle and a police jeep on fire till they were being chased by the Allahabad police. Brijesh, Srivastava, the superintendent of police was quoted in the same report saying, “The situation is now under control.”
The hostelers were only given a week’s time to collect their belongings after they were ordered to vacate the premises. The eviction drive is not run for the first by the Allahabad University hostel authorities. Last year too, they carried out the same and several residents had damaged the hostel possessions before they leave their rooms. While announcing about the eviction drive this time, the proctor warned all the students that strict actions will be taken against those who are found indulging in any violent activity.
