The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has come up with significant improvements recently. The council has now recommended that the institutes should follow more books written by the Indian authors for undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma level engineering students. In a bid to encourage the same, AICTE has released a list of books by the authors and publishers of India for engineering courses. All the books are in-line with the ‘model curricular’ which is prepared by the AICTE and inaugurated by the Minister of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Prakash Javadekar. Recommended New Exam Policies Proposed by AICTE.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has lauded the idea, reported The Indian Express. In an official circular, UGC wrote, “It is hoped that this list will draw on Indian experience and contextualise in Indian on the Indian setting may aid students in better learning of concepts and in turn improve their quality.” Introducing the same, the advisory body expects the move to be appreciated and encourage Indian authors to write more about engineering, technology and related fields. The adviser of AICTE, Rajive Kumar said that the list had been prepared by the expert panel and the books represent both industry and academia. AICTE Will Offer Tuition Fee Waiver for PG Courses; Key Points You Should Know About New TFW Scheme.

The list will erase the myth that foreign authored books are better than the Indian ones. Where the AICTE strives to introduce more Indian authored books, the director of Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Rajan Bose, recommends that the books should be selected on the basis of their relevance to the course, instead of focussing on the nationality of the author. He was quoted in the same report, “Good books are written all over the world. The outlook of Indian authors versus the rest of the world is not the right approach in choosing books. There are relatively lesser Indian authors in the field of technology and we should give them incentives to write more.”

However, the ultimate choice will be of students on which book they want to follow. There are not many Indian authors in the field of engineering and technology. A BTech software final-year student in DAV Institute of Engineering & Technology shared his experience on the same. He said, “There are limited Indian authors in technology related field who produce original content. Many books are often mere compilations. On the other hand, foreign authors have more quality content and their books are practical-oriented. When it comes to technical subjects like computational, data structure etc, foreign authors are always a better choice.”
