Every individual, if given a chance can rightfully prove their potential, irrespective of wherever they are. Age no bar or in this case is behind the bar too cannot stop you from shinning. Yes, in yet another remarkable feat, a prisoner at Mangaldai District Jail topped in the final results of the class 12 Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP) under Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU), Assam. Against all the odds, life convict Arupjyoti Deka scored an aggregate of 80.33 per cent and letter marks in English, Economics, Political Science and Sociology. Interestingly, not just him, his inmates too surpassed the exams with top scores among the total of 3,073 candidates across the state. Slightly remaining behind, Dhrubajyoti Hazarika scored 73 per cent, and Ilias Purti secured 71 per cent being the top sixth and tenth rank holders respectively; reported The Hindu. The news has delighted the jail mates. In the past too, Mangaldai District Jail has appeared in the news for giving its prisoners an opportunity to make their life little better. Apart from the mentioned-above prisoners, four other prisoners who had appeared in the exam successfully passed the KKHSOU BPP exams. All of them have participated in the exam from the Study Centre of the KKHSOU which is prepared in the district jail with the support from Brilliant Academy Junior College. 32-year-old topper Arupjyoti Deka is serving a life term after being convicted for murder. Deka also works as the jail’s librarian besides compiling an Assamese monthly wall magazine titled Karalipi (jail script in Assamese) for poems, essays and fiction written by the prisoners.
