New Delhi, May 9: Earthquake tremors were felt in parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab and Delhi-NCR. The quake measured upto 6.2 magnitude, according to the US Geological Survey. The epicentre of the earthquake was reported to be the Hindukush region of Afghanistan, with tremors originating from 38 km beneath the surface.

The jolts were felt at around 4:10 pm in the Indian administered region of Kashmir. "The tremors were strong. We felt them for nearly a minute. Several of us stepped out of their houses," said Anantnag resident Aamir Salati. The jolts were also experienced in neighbouring Shopian, Srinagar and other southern regions of the Valley.

The impact of earthquake was also felt in Pakistan's Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other regions of the Northwest Frontier.

The worst impact of the quake, reports said, was felt in Afghanistan's Kabul, where dilapidated properties are suspected to be damaged. However, no loss of lives or injuries were reported.

Earlier in the day, a 5.5 magnitude quake had struck Afghanistan and parts of northwestern Pakistan. No casualties were reported.

The Hindu Kush region bordering with Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, is considered prone to light and medium intensity earthquakes. The worst earthquake in the region, in the past decade, was reported in October 2015, when 380 people had died and over 1,170 sustained injuries.
