Delhi Uber Molestation Case: Cab Service Provider Apologizes, Ensures Strict Action against Driver
The incident involved, where a 24-year old girl was allegedly locked inside the car by its driver, who sexually harassed and threatened her.
Uber has recently issued a statement, where they have clarified their stand on the alleged abduction and the molestation of a woman passenger in Haryana. The cab service provider on Tuesday, apologized for the action of the driver and ensured that strict action will be taken against the accused.
According to a report on ANI, an Uber spokesperson has been quoted as saying, "We regret the unfortunate experience the rider had during her trip. Uber takes the safety of riders and drivers using the Uber App extremely seriously. The drivers in the present incident have violated the terms of the agreement that Uber signs with its Driver-Partners. Such behaviour puts our riders and driver partners at risk and is not tolerated.”
The spokesperson has further said, "We immediately removed the driver partner's access to the Uber App and will take strict action against him for letting an unregistered driver without a licence access his account and take trips via Uber App. We will also take strict action against the unauthorized driver. We stand ready to support law enforcement authorities with any information needed for their investigation.”
The incident involved, where a 24-year old girl was allegedly locked inside the car by its driver, who sexually harassed and threatened her. When she tried to escape the driver activated the car’s central locking system thus preventing her from escaping. It was later revealed that the car was not even registered with Uber and the driver too was different.
Reportedly, when the woman got into the cab, the first thing she noticed was that the vehicle did not have a yellow number plate and minutes into the ride, she allegedly found the driver's conduct suspicious. The woman, however, managed to unlock the door and jump out when the cab slowed down again near a CNG pump in Jahangirpuri. The driver identified at Sanjeev alias Sanju has been arrested.
In 2014, there was widespread outrage against Uber in India, after a woman passenger was raped by one of their driver. It led to the service being temporarily banned in Delhi.
