New Delhi, June 5: At least one alleged thief was killed and another arrested after the Delhi Police intercepted a stolen SUV in the wee hours of Sunday. The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Noor Mohammed, a resident of Jaipur. His accomplice Ravi alias Kuldeep has been taken into custody.

The incident was reported from East Vivek Vihar area, where the police had located the stolen Fortuner car. The thieves had replaced its number plate with a fake one. The security forces, instead of towing away the stolen car, laid a trap to nab the gang involved behind the crime.

At around 3am, the thieves reached the spot in a Maruti Suzuki Brezza. Two among them got down and attempted to enter inside the stolen Fortuner. After they were stopped by the police personnel, who were present at the spot in plain clothes, the duo launched gunfire.

While Ravi was overpowered and nabbed by the police, Mohammed drove the car away amid the ruckus. He, however, lost control over the vehicle and rammed it into a road divider

One of the police personnel, who tried to stop him ahead, was compelled to fire a bullet as the deceased had allegedly attempted to run him over. The bullet struck Mohammed on his chest. He was rushed to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital and declared dead on arrival.

The police team is currently interrogating Ravi, the apprehended thief, to crackdown on the inter-state gang involved in auto-lifting.
