Delhi High Court Restrains Authorities From Felling of Trees For Redevelopment

New Delhi, July 4: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday placed its interim order restraining authorities from felling of more than 14,000 trees for redevelopment of three central government housing projects in south Delhi. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on July 2 stayed the felling of trees in Delhi till July 19.
While placing its interim order on cutting of trees, the High Court also sought a detailed response from DDA, NBCC, Centre and the Delhi government on the plea related to chopping of trees. DDA and NBCC asked to file a detailed reply explaining the meaning of redevelopment.
The redevelopment projects in seven south Delhi colonies recently become a contentious issue between the AAP dispensation and the central government over felling of around 14,000 trees.
According to NBCC, approximately 13,000 trees will have to be axed in Delhi's southern region -- also one of the greenest areas -- in the plan to redevelop three residential colonies to construct 25,000 new flats and a parking space for about 70,000 vehicles.
Last month, the central government had announced that no tree would be cut while executing the redevelopment projects.
