New Delhi, Mar 19: Delhi has 556 motor vehicles per one thousand people, with every second person in the city owning a vehicle, the Economic Survey (2017-18) said today.

According to the survey report tabled in the Delhi Assembly, total number of motor vehicles on the city road was 1,03 crore as on March 31, 2017, thus registering a growth of 6.99 per cent as compared to 2016-17.

Car and jeeps account for more than 30 per cent of the total registered vehicles, whereas two-wheelers comprise about 64 per cent, it said.

The survey, however, pointed out certain contradictions in the data as it noted that a large number of vehicles registered in Delhi were plying in the NCR areas, whereas the vehicles registered in NCR were plying in the national capital.

"The transport department is making efforts to estimate the actual number of vehicles in Delhi by taking into account those vehicles that have outlived their life or transferred to and from other states," the survey said.

As per the report, during the last decade, the percentage of households using scooters and motor cycles has increased from 28 per cent in 2001 to 38.90 per cent in 2011.

During the same period, the percentage of households using cars, jeeps and vans as the mode of transportation in the city has also increased from 13 per cent to 20.7 per cent, it said.

Contrary to this, the percentage of households using bicycle as the mode of transport has declined from 37.6 per cent in 2001 to 30.6 per cent in 2011, it said.

Buses and metro rail comprise the public transport in the city with the latter having a ridership of 28 lakh per day. The metro ridership is further expected to increase by up to 40 lakh per day after completion of the DMRC's phase-III, the survey said.

The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), which runs 4,027 buses, carries 32 lakh passengers per day on an average.
