New Delhi, July 15: The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Centre on a PIL by three women seeking direction to decriminalise abortion and to allow every woman to have a choice of reproduction. According to an ANI update, the PIL says restrictions and exceptions in Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act violate women's rights. Abortion in India is currently allowed until the 20th week of pregnancy and only in exceptional cases, the Court can allow abortion to be done after the 20th week. In January this year, New York state was in the news for passing an abortion law, prioritising the mother’s health.

In another case, last week, the Delhi High Court allowed the abortion of more than a 20 week-old foetus after the doctors informed the court and to the petitioner (who sought abortion) of the dire consequences of the abortion of the foetus. One of the doctors present in the Court clarified the position that there was indeed a risk in conducting the surgery on the 6.5 month foetus. The court explained the risk to the Petitioner who duly acknowledged it.
